Much ink has been spilled out of love for and frustration about integrated bracelets. We find ourselves in agreement with some of the frustration, yet there remains a strong appeal to the smooth continuity of a form that flows from dial to wrist and back. There are also a whole host of engineering and design challenges around this, because you go from a circle in one axis to a circle in another with a change in diameter to accommodate different wrist sizes. No wonder then, that the majority of integrated bracelet watches tend to look and feel the same.
We have spent several years trying to fix that. Our goal was to make a watch that was more comfortable to wear than any traditional design, bracelet or strap. We believe we have succeeded with the MING 56.00 Starfield.
The Starfield is the next watch in our fifth-generation design language and is a watch for the confident and unapologetic. And it all starts with the bracelet.
The trick to making a comfortable integrated design work? Progressive curvature across multiple axes, curved links and a higher pivot point. This allows the bracelet to conform smoothly to any wrist size without gaps or pinch points.
Comfort and ease of use must start right out of the box though and to make the Starfield easy-to-size, we developed a new, patent pending tool-less resizing system. There is a slider on the back of each removable link that can be activated with deliberate motion but is positively locked as soon as engaged. No more fiddling with screwdrivers to size your bracelet.
But wait, there’s more. While adjustments requiring the addition or removal of entire links only happen once or rarely, the ability to make micro-adjustments over the course of the day is far more useful with bracelets. And so we developed another, new, patent pending microadjust system built into the clasp. Microadjust clasps generally suffer from a thickness problem. With the Starfield however, we have our thinnest pushbutton clasp yet, which has been carefully profiled and integrated with a mechanism that allows up to 2.5mm of on-the-fly microadjustment on each side (for a total of 5mm, in 1.25mm increments). Not only are half links not required, but it is the most finely adjustable bracelet we’ve made to date.
If you’re getting the impression there’s a lot of engineering in this bracelet, that’s because there is – enough to make it the subject of at least two patent applications.
The better the integrated bracelet, the better the rest of the watch must be. Integrated is really the operative word: the entire watch and especially the transition from bracelet to watch head is intentionally organic, sensually curved, and as seamless yet flexible as possible. There are design nods to our flared lugs and round origins; a HyCeram luminous insert in the case provides visual balance, an acknowledgement of our earlier 19-series, where a strap might have once lived, and a nocturnal signature befitting a MING.
We have once again thrown the proverbial book at it: a seamless sapphire box crystal encapsulates a 1.7mm thick sapphire dial that brings back our proprietary sapphire Mosaic. Blued hands, crystal-set indices and a mix of MING Polar White and Super-LumiNova X1 finish things off dial side.
In most watches– the naming is inspired by the dial side or the case design. For the Starfield, the inspiration comes from the caseback where the party continues with a unique jump to warp speed. With a swing of the rotor or twist of the crown in winding position, the stars streak and blur. Of course, it’s even better in the dark thanks to a liberal application of Super-LumiNova X1.
The Starfield clocks in at 40x9.7mm and to enable this svelte profile, we have partnered with Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier. The watch is powered by the Vaucher for MING Cal.3002.M1 with a proprietary rotor that makes the warp speed possible. The net sum of all of this is, in our opinion, the most comfortable integrated bracelet watch ever designed, and one whose on-wrist feel and visuals seem almost unrelated to its dimensions. It is sleek and lives large at the same time.
Last, but not least – the Starfield will be delivered in the first of a new generation of packaging designed by MING and produced by storied Malaysian pewter maker Royal Selangor, which has been in business since 1885.
