Launched in 2024, our 37.02 Minimalist marked the first watch in our permanent, core collection and more importantly, a shift back to having watches in stock and ready to ship. The Minimalist was significant as a watch that encapsulates what MING is all about: distinctive yet reductivist design; refined quality; innovative technology and great value.
Sometimes though, that isn’t enough and we want more. We want a secret handshake. We want something that whispers, “if you know you know”; a watch that flies under the radar. This is why we have always offered a stealthier, rarer variant of our most popular pieces and naturally, we’ve decided to do the same with the Minimalist.
Enter the MING 37.02 Monolith: a stealthy, DLC-coated, mixed matte and brushed finished edition of the Minimalist with a restricted annual production to balance accessibility and exclusivity.
Like most of our new watches, the 37.02 Monolith is assembled at our own facility in Switzerland, but paradoxically carries no ‘Swiss Made’ mark as all the key engineering and development work is done by Ming Thein (MT) out of our Kuala Lumpur office. (And Swiss Made regulations require the engineering to be done in Switzerland).
Our proprietary MING Polar White luminous material is also prepared personally by MT in Kuala Lumpur using an internally developed process and formula. Featured in the sapphire dial of the Monolith, its name comes from the fact that it emits in all wavelengths and is therefore one of the very few (if not the only) luminous materials to truly glow white.
The dial is dynamic in the way that only sapphire can be – it inverts, glows, reflects seemingly floating markers, or sucks light like a black hole depending on the angle. It is legible, balanced, and has visual tension without being symmetric. All dial markings are laser cut channels into the sapphire dial and then liquid filled with MING Polar White. We left the hands traditional Super-LumiNova X1 Blue for relative contrast.
The Monolith’s case has a narrow bezel for visual punch and mixed brushed-matte blasted finishes for texture. It is sized at 38x11mm in stainless steel, with a hard-wearing anthracite DLC coating. It wears visually larger and thinner than its dimensions suggest yet remains comfortable on a wide range of wrist sizes. For everyday resilience, it is double gasketed with a 100m water resistance and is powered by a Sellita for MING SW300.M1 with unique skeletonized anthracite bridges, plates and rotor.
In response to feedback and popular demand from our Uni launch and to best prepare the Monolith for the summer, we have paired it with our Mango FKM rubber strap with matching, DLC coated tuck buckle. We still maintain that our FKM rubber straps are some of the most comfortable straps available out there.
